heapbyte - A name of excellence

Team

Senior engineers.
No layers in between.

HeapByte is a small, senior team. The engineer who audits your store writes the code, reviews the pull requests and joins the launch call. Specialists come in for the slice of work they own, and everything they ship is reviewed before it merges.

Operating model

The person who understands your store is the person typing.

Most agencies grow by adding translation layers — account managers, delivery leads, offshore pods. Every layer loses information about why a decision was made. We removed the layers instead, and accepted the ceiling on how much work we can take at once.

01The people

N1Placeholder profiles. Send real names, bios and photos and these rows swap over without any layout work.

Five senior engineers. Each one owns a discipline end to end and reviews the work of the person next to them.

02How we work together

Five rules that decide who touches your store and how their work gets checked.

  1. 01

One named engineer, start to finish

You are introduced to the person doing the work at the audit stage, and that person stays through handover. No account manager sits between you and the code.

  2. 02

Specialists join for the part they own

Performance, integrations and app work pull in a specialist for that slice only. Their scope is written down, and the lead engineer reviews everything before it merges.

  3. 03

    Review is not a formality

Every pull request is read by a second senior pair of eyes against the architecture decisions agreed at scope. Disagreements get resolved in the repository, in writing.

  4. 04

    Context is documented, not memorised

Decisions, rejected options and known trade-offs live in the repo so a second engineer can take over in hours if life happens. Continuity is a process, not a promise.

  5. 05

We staff to capacity, not to pipeline

We turn work down rather than assign it to someone who was not part of the original audit. That is the constraint that keeps the rest of this true.

03What day one looks like

Before anyone proposes a solution, the engineer assigned to you pulls the theme into version control and measures the store as it actually is. The findings document comes before the quote — every time.

04The bar

  1. 01

Eight years is the floor, not the headline

Everyone who touches client code has shipped production Shopify work for years, including at Plus scale, and has been on the wrong end of a launch that went badly.

  2. 02

    Can explain the trade-off to a non-engineer

If a decision cannot be explained to a merchandiser in two sentences, it is not understood well enough to ship.

  3. 03

    Comfortable saying no

The ability to tell a client they do not need the thing they asked for is a hiring criterion, not a personality quirk.

06Questions about the team

Work with us

Talk to the engineer, not a salesperson.

Send the store URL and what is breaking. The person who replies is the person who would do the work.
