Product Configurators

Products that are made to order rather than picked off a shelf. Price is a function of what the customer enters, so there is no variant to select.

Case studies

The useful question is not how many variants Shopify allows. It is whether you could write down every purchasable combination. If you could — three sizes, twelve colours, four materials — you have an enumeration problem, and the variant model is the right home for it. Since 15 October 2025 it holds 2,048 variants per product, on every plan, with nothing to enable.

If you could not, no variant count helps, because the set is not finite. A shelf priced by depth and length in fractional increments has no combination count. Neither does a curtain cut to 2,347mm. Two limits make the point: the three-option cap did not move with the variant increase, and neither did the 250-media cap. A product can now hold 2,048 variants and 250 images, so past 250 you cannot show a distinct picture per variant at all.

All four of these builds started from the second case. Custom Floating Shelves prices on material, width, depth, thickness, finish and hardware across 18 materials, with fractional dimensions and material-specific restrictions. Vorhang Schweiz treats width and height as continuous measurements rather than options. Citizen Atelier composes frame previews across three orientations instead of uploading every combination. BE O Lifestyle places an uploaded logo onto the selected product while the customer watches.

What they share is that the pricing rule, not the product record, is the thing being built — and that the rule still has to survive the trip into the cart, where Shopify's checkout is the one part you do not get to replace.

The engineering behind this work is custom Shopify app development.
